I totally agree with Susan. 13 years is not that big of a gap and you are still young enough to have children. However, having said that I know someone in the EXACT same situation as you. The guy is turning 23 and his live-in gf is about 35 and has a daughter. His mom just found out about the two of them and is doing everything in her power to ruin his life and break them up. The guy is very committed to his gf and determined to make things work with her so even though it is causing him some stress, he is determined not to let it get to him.
So as far as facing a lifetime of criticism from family and friends goes, yes, it is very possible. You two will just have to decide if that is something you are willing to deal with or not. You can only control the controllables. You can never control what someone else will think, say or feel. So don't even try.
