Default Those Who Have Been in War

Those who have been in war can tell you that nothing in war is fair. I learned that lesson in captivity during the Vietnam War. Those who have truly been in love can tell you that burning desire has no fairness, its only passion is longing.

"All's fair in love and war." Only those who have never been there would say that. And they would mean it.

I'm not sure why people assume life is supposed to be "fair" in the first place...

I've always thought the phrase is meant to insinuate that love, in some ways, is war.

Yep, meaning some are free, some cost a fortune, you only get enough tickets to ride all the ****py rides, activities vary widely, and you inevitably leave with puke on your shoes and cotton candy in your hair. That is life.
You know, the rides that make me puke (or come close) are usually my favorite. Sounds like a good time!
