Anywaywhothebeepcaresaboutforumpowerstruggles: regarding the ORIGINAL (fake) post - personally I can't see how discussing a (fake) hypothetical problem between (imaginary) love affairs between high school students could minimally interest readers of a cougar site but hey, whoever's interested, go for it. I'll probably read it (and shrug - doing a bit of that here, anyway).

Tarni's mention of hypothetical abuse as Moderator really puzzles me. Alluding to one's power to ban sounds like a veiled threat, and I find this inappropriate, since it isn't an Official Warning to someone who is actually doing something wrong.

However, it DOES open an interesting hypothetical discussion: what would GoCougar do if Moderation WAS missused?

I just could not resist this, Moderation power is misused all the time...threats are made and some fear it and some don't. This has been a issue since I have been on here, and it is bewildering. Admin unfortunately has a blind eye to what goes on, the only thing they will do is reprimand the person issuing the complaint. This I know because it has happened to me again and again. I like to deal with realities not fiction so that is where I stand....and I know I will catch hell for it.

I moderated a forum for 8 years. The role of a Moderator is to ensure that the Forums aren't abused by users, and to act as the neutral "Cooler Head That Prevails" when flame wars begin: basically, a Moderator is a kind of referee, ensuring that rules are observed, and rule-breakers are warned and/or penalized.

A referee who says "Hey, although it's illegal, I could throw you out of the game if I wanted to" reveals a strange interpretation of the referee's responsibility - and those who hear it wonder if the referee is truly fair-minded and just. The same goes for a forum Moderator who says, "I dont do those things even though I can": no, you CAN'T do that, and still be a good Moderator. Even referring to it is wrong.

Having said that, I'm ready to return to normal topics of conversation, and I hope everyone else will be, too.

Good idea about going to admin, if they gave a rat's behind, but in your case you have something on them or they are just blind to your way of aggrivating the hell out of people. TOS rules, don't seem to apply to you as you twist them to suit your needs, and no I am not going to go digging anything up as a quote.

Tarni, we all know that anyone who writes in a Forum has to face the possibility that others may comment, that's the nature of a Forum (I know, big "DUH" but sometimes it's necessary to review the basics).

Therefore (stay with me folks), "I dont do those things [[delete their statements or ban their IP address from here]] even though I can".

Actually, most Moderators ARE unpaid volunteers. And many Moderators also participate on the Forums they moderate. Where it gets sticky is when the separate roles are not, in fact, separate. It's hard to be neutral as a Moderator AND as a Participant: I know from direct experience! But I've witnessed Forums where Moderators abused their role to persecute people they didn't like, and it destroyed the Forums. That's why I commented on your remark, which I found (and still find) inappropriate: you have a right as a member to post and blog your opinions, of course - but you also have a responsibility to remain neutral if you're going to act as a Moderator.

Perhaps you should consider using two IDs on the Forum: one as a Participant, and the other as the Moderator (using it only to Officially Intervene when others break TOS). That would also make it easier for others to understand clearly which "voice" you're using - as it is now, it's not always clear.
