Ailurophile, my favorite compliment isn't verbal - it's when a guy really looks at me and makes good eye contact, smiles, comes over to say hello and shows me that he'd like to know me better. If he doesn't ruin it with a banal comment like, "Wow yer haaawt" (translation: Wow, you're hot), I like it very, very much - and I'm already half way to liking him a lot, too.

If someone on this site called me cute, I would just take it as a compliment and think he's flirting with me and if I liked his profile I might even flirt back. On the other hand, "hey cutie" just sounds a bit sleazy before you get to know me. Not my style.

But ailurophile, what's wrong with just being sincere? There's no one size fits all compliment, and being yourself is your best chance. You want someone to like you the way you are, don't you? And she will like that you said something that shows you actually paid attention to her profile/picture/whatever.
