I get serial messages from cubs who seem very keen and they send me their email addresses and additional pictures of themselves (not rude ones thank u very much!!) but when I ask them to tell me about themselves they disappear into the ether Am I frightening them off or are they just time wasters when it becomes obvious I am not into exchanging saucy emails?

The majority of those people are fake. I'm on quite a few dating sites and report as many as 100 per week. Some have as many as 20-30 profiles up at once and have no idea who they're talking too. And most of them just want your email address to sell to marketing companies. You fell for their trap, sorry to say.
