Houston I am sorry you had to live through that. That is a loss you can never fully get over. It amounts to a new normal, well when acceptance part of grief comes.
The other event that shaped me was the loss of an officer and friend. I was dispatching when that call came in. The worst part I felt guilty even though I didn't send him to the call and by the time the call for help came to me he was already gone. His wife called my cell phone wanting to know what was going on... That was news I never wanted to deliver let alone on a cell phone.
I had nightmares about that call and felt guilty until someone asked what could I have done differently... The realization came that couldn't have changed the outcome, and in fact was able to keep anyone else from being hurt or killed.
