I usually do travel alone, but then I meet up with people when I get there, sometimes people I've met online or in connection with my hobbies or work. If I have a traveling companion, I like someone who is independent so we can both go our separate ways if we want to do different things and then meet back up later.

I have travelled around Europe and Asia but always with another person although when we have had disagreements I can see the joy of travelling alone! One of my daughters went alone to India, Nepal, China and Japan though she may have joined a couple of groups for the sake of safety a couple of times. She also visited Paris, Rome, Barcelona and New York alone. Generally single travellers, from what I have been told, are always able to meet up with other like-minded people particularly if you stay in hostels.

I have not traveled alone like you're talking about chilled but I have gone to visit three different men on my own. It was frightening, exhilarating and memorable every time. I don't think it is something I would get used to though. I love traveling with gfs to different places as long as I can leave them when they are being ummm difficult.

I'm like Violet, I usually travel alone (even before I had a job that forced solo travel). And yes, I've been around Europe and Australia alone. I started traveling solo as a teen actually, and that was because I didn't have many friends who took a hiatus before going off to college or who were brave enough to join me in foreign travel (money's also an issue at that age). Anyway, ever since then, I've not really had a problem with it (I'm mid-30s now). I do have to admit though that, at times, it gets lonely if I end up in a place that's a bit TOO foreign and hadn't managed to make new friends there at some point along the way (as was the case in China, for instance). But overall, I'm really happy to have seen the things and places I've seen. I've also exposed my mom to new places as well, which is fun too. |

I've traveled alone and with others, both here (Oz) and quite a bit in the USA. I don't mind being somewhere on my own, as I don't have trouble talking to others - especially in the USA where a whiff of an Aussie accent drew the crowds. I think being on your own forces you to interact with strangers more, and that can make things a lot more interesting.

People certainly do love accents. The funniest thing was in a historical village in Louisiana, talking to an elderly gentleman with a very strong Cajun accent. We were both struggling to understand each other...and yet we were both speaking the same language!
