Lynda, i'm not sure that they assumed an older woman would take any particular kind of role in a relationship. I think it was more that one might assume certain behaviours and traits about an older woman built and created through life experience and forming her attitude within the relationship. Perhaps choosing "her role" would be for lack of a better way to put it.
