If someone doesnt have to rely on weak currencies like USD/CAD/AUD it is actually very affordable to travel even with a midrange income.

AFAIK in the UK and the GBP was always quiet strong, hence the good conversion rates. Plus Europeans were always more encouraged to leave their countries while many Americans never left the continental U.S. and even Hawaii / Alaska is a big event.
