Experience has taught me well...to protect yourself from being scammed don't make any decision about the guy until you actually see the guy, either on live Skype or in person. If he claims to be from the US, has a business and says he makes over $100K a year, and he has a foreign accent, that is a strong indication he's hoping to scam you. Don't give anyone personal information or financial information, and for gods sake, don't be suckered into giving them money. For all you know, you are actually talking to some chick in Nigeria.
